Thinning hair: test first, then what rosemary oil and pumpkin seed oil show

Hair shedding in women has many causes: low iron stores, thyroid problems, stress or illness a few months earlier, postpartum changes and female pattern hair loss. Testing finds the fixable ones. Rosemary oil and pumpkin seed oil each have one small trial; here is what they showed.

Quick answer

The quick answer

  • Test first: ferritin (iron stores), thyroid, vitamin D, and a full blood count. Low iron stores are common in women who shed hair.
  • Rosemary oil matched 2% minoxidil after 6 months in one trial without a placebo; 2% is weaker than the standard 5% foam for women.
  • Pumpkin seed oil raised hair counts in one small trial in men.
  • Biotin does not help hair unless you are deficient (rare), and high doses distort lab tests.

Story

A story you might recognize

Composite story built from common reader accounts; details changed. Not a testimonial.

She is 42 and noticed her ponytail getting thinner and more hair in the shower drain. Rosemary oil videos promised regrowth in weeks.

Her clinician checked ferritin, thyroid and vitamin D: ferritin was low. Iron, a wider part line in photos as a baseline, and rosemary oil as an add-on. At six months the shedding had slowed. For the pattern thinning at the crown, she was referred to a dermatologist to talk about proven options.

In depth

Common causes

  • Telogen effluvium: diffuse shedding 2–4 months after illness, surgery, childbirth, crash dieting or major stress. It usually recovers.
  • Iron deficiency and thyroid disease.
  • Female pattern hair loss: gradual thinning at the part and crown, often after menopause.
  • Tight hairstyles (traction), some medicines, and scalp conditions.

The plan

The plan

  1. Get tested. Ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D and a blood count.
  2. Correct what is low. Iron only if ferritin is low.
  3. Baseline photos. Same light and angle every 3 months; hair changes are slow.
  4. Optional add-ons. Rosemary oil on the scalp and pumpkin seed oil capsules, judged at 6 months.
  5. See a dermatologist. For pattern thinning, patches, scalp symptoms, or no improvement. Proven treatments exist.

The test-first hair stack

Correct low iron first; rosemary oil and pumpkin seed oil are optional add-ons with one small trial each. Evidence grade: A strong · B moderate · C limited · D preliminary.

  1. 01

Iron (only if ferritin is low)

Low iron stores are common in women who shed hair; correcting a deficiency is the first step.

What the research shows: Reviews of hair shedding in women link low ferritin to hair loss, but trials of iron for hair regrowth are few and small. Iron does help people who are deficient for many other reasons. Graded D for hair. (PMID 16635664, PMID 29032957)

    • Do not take iron without a blood test: too much iron is harmful, especially with hereditary hemochromatosis.
    • Keep iron away from children; overdose is dangerous.
    • Constipation and nausea are common; alternate-day dosing reduces them.

    In the studies

    • Iron studies in women commonly gave 60 mg of elemental iron on alternate days, which was absorbed better than daily dosing.

  2. 02Optional

Rosemary oil (diluted, on the scalp)

Optional, low-cost and low-risk. One trial found it matched a low-strength over-the-counter hair-loss treatment, which is weaker than standard treatment.

What the research shows: In 100 people with pattern hair loss, neither rosemary oil nor 2% minoxidil changed hair count at 3 months; at 6 months both groups had more hair than at baseline, with no difference between them. One trial, no placebo group. (PMID 25842469)

    • Always dilute; patch-test first. Stop if the scalp becomes red or itchy. Avoid in pregnancy and keep away from the eyes.

    In the studies

    • The comparison trial applied a rosemary oil preparation to the scalp daily for 6 months; the concentration was not stated in the abstract.

    Pumpkin seed oil (capsules)

Optional. One small trial, in men only.

    • Generally well tolerated; mild stomach upset.

    In the studies

    • The trial in men with pattern hair loss gave 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 24 weeks.

Left out

What we left out, and why

Biotin
Biotin deficiency is rare, and there is no good evidence biotin helps hair in people who are not deficient. High doses interfere with lab tests, including thyroid and heart (troponin) tests.
Hair gummies
Mostly biotin and sugar.
