How we chose

The rule

Applied to the melatonin page's Where to buy rows
  • Every plain melatonin product on our list that can be priced per tablet or capsule, so nothing is picked. Products with other active ingredients are left out, because their price also pays for those; a liquid is left out because it cannot be priced per tablet.
  • Prices and label lines are the ones on our melatonin page, with the date each was checked.
  • Who pays us does not change the order. Every row’s link looks the same; a link that pays us is marked “Paid link”.

Dose against the studied range

What the melatonin page records

The trials it cites, graded

Doses studied in human trials ranged from 0.5 to 5 mg of melatonin a night (in jet-lag trials, doses above 5 mg were no more effective), often for a few nights (jet lag) up to 4 weeks. In pooled analyses by amount, effects peaked near 4 mg a day in adults and 2 to 4 mg in children.

  • Sleep onset and total sleep by dose and timing (grade B): Effect rose with dose, peaking at 4 mg/day.
  • Earlier sleep onset with a delayed body clock (grade B): 0.5 mg 1 hour before the desired bedtime, at least 5 nights a week.
  • Jet lag symptoms after flights across five or more time zones (grade B): 0.5 to 5 mg near bedtime at the destination; higher doses were no more effective.

Grades and sources for each are on the melatonin page.

Cautions

From the melatonin page

NIH and the AASM
  • Children. Talk with a health care provider first. Dose, timing and long-term effects in children are uncertain, it may affect hormonal development, and accidental ingestion by young children has risen sharply. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine advises handling melatonin like any other medicine, keeping it out of children's reach, and considering behavioral approaches first.
  • Gummies. Flavored products such as gummies feature in many accidental ingestions by young children (NCCIH, citing CDC).

Questions

Common questions

Which melatonin dose is best?

This page does not pick one. Trials studied 0.5 to 5 mg a night; the evidence on dose and timing, with its grade, is in the section above. Your pharmacist or clinician can help with dose and timing for what you are using it for.

Is a higher dose more effective?

Not past a point. In pooled analyses by amount, effects peaked near 4 mg a day in adults, and in jet-lag trials doses above 5 mg were no more effective.

Why compare price per mg as well as per tablet?

The products here hold 1 mg or 3 mg a tablet or capsule, so a cheaper tablet is not always cheaper melatonin. The per-mg column puts them on one scale.

When the brand is an active partner, yes: its link is marked "Paid link" and pays us a commission. Every row’s link looks the same, and the order (by dose, then price per tablet) does not change with who pays us.
