Collagen for skin: what the trend gets wrong

Collagen powders are a billion-dollar category built on before-and-after photos. A 2025 meta-analysis found something striking: the positive results came from company-funded and lower-quality trials, while independent and high-quality trials found no effect. Daily sunscreen remains the best-proven skin-aging tool.

Quick answer

The quick answer

  • Across 23 trials, collagen looked helpful overall, but trials without industry funding, and high-quality trials, found no effect on hydration, elasticity or wrinkles.
  • Astaxanthin improved skin moisture and elasticity slightly in small trials; wrinkles did not change.
  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and not smoking have the strongest evidence for slowing skin aging; topical retinoids are well supported too.
  • If you enjoy collagen as a protein source, it is safe for most people; it is just not proven for skin.

Story

Why this trend took off

Collagen is the main protein in skin, so swallowing collagen to rebuild skin sounds intuitive. It gets digested into amino acids and small peptides first, and the body decides where they go.

Early trials, many funded by collagen manufacturers, reported better hydration and elasticity. When independent researchers pooled the trials and split them by funding and quality, the effect disappeared.

In depth

What the 2025 meta-analysis found

  • All 23 trials (1,474 people): hydration, elasticity and wrinkles improved.
  • Trials without pharmaceutical-company funding: no effect on any of the three.
  • High-quality trials: no significant effect in any category.
  • The authors concluded there is currently no clinical evidence to support collagen supplements for skin aging.

The plan

What to do instead

  1. Step 1Daily sunscreen

Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day, reapplied outdoors.

  2. Step 2A retinoid at night

Over-the-counter retinol or adapalene, started slowly; skip in pregnancy.

  3. Step 3Protein and sleep

Adequate protein, vitamin C-rich foods and sleep support skin repair.

  4. Step 4Optional extras

Astaxanthin has small positive trials; collagen if you like it as protein.

The stack

If you want an ingestible

Both optional and graded C. Sunscreen and a retinoid do more. Evidence grade: A strong · B moderate · C limited · D preliminary.

  1. 01Optional

    Astaxanthin

Optional. Small improvements in skin moisture and elasticity; no clear change in wrinkles.

What the research shows: A 2021 meta-analysis of 9 trials found oral astaxanthin improved skin moisture and elasticity versus placebo, but wrinkle depth did not change significantly. Small trials. (PMID 34578794, PMID 29941810)

    • Generally well tolerated; may turn stools reddish at high amounts.

    In the studies

    • Skin trials gave 4–12 mg of astaxanthin a day; two trials used 2 mg a day combined with collagen or tocotrienols.

    Collagen peptides

Optional. Positive results come mostly from company-funded trials.

What the research shows: Across 23 trials (1,474 people), collagen improved hydration, elasticity and wrinkles overall. But trials without industry funding, and the high-quality trials, showed no effect, and the authors concluded there is currently no clinical evidence to support collagen for skin aging. • Generally well tolerated. Choose marine or bovine based on allergies and diet.

    In the studies

    • The 23 trials in the 2025 meta-analysis gave collagen supplements daily; amounts and durations varied and are not given in its abstract.

Collagen "beauty drinks" with added extras
Often small collagen amounts plus sugar and flavors, at premium prices.
Glutathione pills for "glow"
Poorly absorbed by mouth, with little human evidence for skin, and some products are marketed for skin lightening.
