Compare omega-3 supplements

19 fish, krill and algal oils, ranked on EPA + DHA, cost per gram, form and independent purity tests we could open. Pick a goal to re-rank them by fit.

Informational only. Omega-3 supplements are not a substitute for care. The strongest evidence is for lower triglycerides; large trials found little or no effect on heart events, and more atrial fibrillation above 1 g a day.24

Your goal: fit, ratio and cost

Each goal has its own EPA to DHA profile and daily range, taken from the trials we cite. Fit re-ranks the list; the medals above do not change.

Heart and triglycerides

Fit re-ranks; medals stay

Evidence: Triglycerides: high certainty. Heart events: little or no effect.

Target ratio
EPA at least 50% of EPA + DHA. EPA-leaning: in the AHA advisory, EPA plus DHA products raised LDL in people with very high triglycerides; EPA-only products did not.5
Daily amount studied
1,000 mg to 4,000 mg EPA + DHA a day. About 1 g a day of EPA + DHA for people with coronary heart disease (AHA, via NIH ODS) up to 4 g a day of prescription omega-3 for very high triglycerides, under medical care.15
  • Triglycerides fell about 15%, more at higher doses (Cochrane, 86 trials, high certainty).2
  • Little or no effect on cardiovascular events (RR 0.96) or stroke in the same review.2
  • VITAL: 1 g a day for a median 5.3 years did not significantly lower major cardiovascular events (HR 0.92).3
  • Across 7 outcome trials (81,210 people), omega-3 was linked to more atrial fibrillation: hazard ratio 1.12 at 1 g a day or less, 1.49 above 1 g.4

Best fit for this goal (ratio 45%, softgels a day to reach 1,000 mg EPA + DHA 35%, overall score 20%)

How we rank omega-3

A 0 to 100 score from five pillars, the same for every product. Rubric omega-v1 (2026-10-20).

Pillars and weights

100 points
  1. 25Dose EPA + DHA per serving: 0 points at 100 mg or less, full points at 1,000 mg or more (most large trials gave about 1 g a day), straight line between.
  2. 25Value Price per gram of EPA + DHA on a log scale: full points at $0.30 or less, none at $3.00 or more. Unknown price or count scores 0.
  3. 10Form Triglyceride, re-esterified triglyceride or phospholipid (krill) 10 points, ethyl ester 7, not stated 0. Kept small: all forms raise blood EPA and DHA.
  4. 25Purity and freshness A current independent lot report with oxidation results 100% (less 2 points per TOTOX unit above 10); a current independent certification without oxidation data 75%; a brand or supplier certificate 30%; an expired one 15%; nothing we could open 0.
  5. 15Transparency EPA and DHA each printed per serving 60% (one combined figure 30%), plus public test documents: an independent report or listing 40%, a brand certificate 25%.

Gates

What a medal needs
  • Medal bar. At least 70/100 and 4.0 out of 5 on our display scale. Our rating out of 5 is our 0–100 rubric score on a category curve: the highest score in each ranking shows 4.9, and every other provider shows 0.1 less for each 2.5 rubric points it trails the leader, rounded down. The curve keeps the exact score order and gaps, and the 0–100 score and its pillar breakdown are printed with every rating. It applies only when at least two providers compete and the leader scores 70/100 or more; otherwise the rating is the score ÷ 20.
  • Quality gate.A current independent purity or oxidation result we could open: an IFOS or IKOS lot report, or an NSF Certified for Sport or NSF/ANSI 173 listing. A brand’s own certificate or a claim on its page is shown, never credited.
  • No unknowns. EPA and DHA each, price, softgel count and form must be on the label or page. A value we could not read scores 0 and cannot earn a medal.
  • Clean vetting for gold. A brand that passed our vetting with conditions keeps its rank and can take silver or bronze, never gold (the same rule as our telehealth rankings).
  • One medal per brand, for its best-scoring product.
  • Commission-blind.Who pays us is stored only for the “Show who pays us” switch; the score never reads it, and a test checks that changing it changes nothing.

Form and freshness

What the label words mean, and why we read the lot report, not the front of the bottle.

Triglyceride, ethyl ester, phospholipid

Fish oil comes as natural triglycerides, ethyl esters (concentrated by distillation) or re-esterified triglycerides (ethyl esters turned back into triglycerides). Krill oil carries much of its omega-3 as phospholipids; algal oil is mostly DHA as triglycerides.1

Triglyceride and free fatty acid forms are somewhat better absorbed than ethyl esters, but all forms raise blood EPA and DHA.1 At matched EPA + DHA, krill, ethyl-ester and triglyceride oils gave similar blood levels.19

Oxidation: peroxide, anisidine, TOTOX

Peroxide value measures early oxidation, anisidine value later breakdown products, and TOTOX combines them (twice peroxide plus anisidine). IFOS limits: peroxide 5 meq/kg, anisidine 20, TOTOX 19.5.

The current lot reports we opened ranged from TOTOX 6.92 to 17.74. Flavor oils such as orange can raise the anisidine reading, which is one reason we use independent lot data rather than a brand’s own claim.

Fish, krill or algae

Read the EPA and DHA lines, not the oil weight: a typical 1,000 mg fish oil capsule holds about 300 mg EPA + DHA.1 In a 7-week trial, krill oil raised blood EPA and DHA as much as fish oil at a lower EPA + DHA dose.21 Krill is a shellfish; algal oil suits fish-free diets and matched salmon for DHA in a small trial.20

Questions

Which omega-3 supplement ranked first?

Sports Research Omega-3 Fish Oil from Wild Alaska Pollock, Triple Strength 1250 mg scored 96.5 out of 100 and took gold: 950 mg EPA + DHA per serving, $0.36 per gram of EPA + DHA, re-esterified triglyceride form, and ifos lot report we could open. The ranking reflects our rubric, not a health claim.

Is krill oil better than fish oil?

Not clearly. At matched EPA + DHA, a 4-week trial of 66 adults found similar blood levels with krill oil and two fish oil forms. Krill softgels hold much less EPA + DHA, so they cost more per gram here.

How much EPA and DHA should I take a day?

There is no US target for EPA and DHA. The European adult reference is 250 mg a day; trials used about 1 g a day for heart outcomes, and 4 g of prescription omega-3 for very high triglycerides under medical care. Use the goal lens to see each goal’s studied range.

Does the form matter: triglyceride, ethyl ester or krill?

A little. NIH ODS notes triglyceride and re-esterified forms are somewhat better absorbed than ethyl esters, but all forms raise blood EPA and DHA. That is why form carries only 10 of our 100 points.

What is TOTOX?

Total oxidation: twice the peroxide value plus the anisidine value, a measure of how oxidised (stale) an oil is. IFOS sets the limit at 19.5. We credit an oxidation result only from a current independent lot report we could open.

Can fish oil affect heart rhythm?

In 7 large trials, omega-3 supplements were linked to more atrial fibrillation: hazard ratio 1.12 at 1 g a day or less and 1.49 above 1 g. If you have atrial fibrillation or take blood thinners, talk to your clinician first.

Do you earn money from these links?

Yes, from some brands. Payment is not an input to the score, the rank, the medals or the order; the “Show who pays us” switch shows which brands pay without moving a row.

Why is OceanBlue ranked but not linked or medalled?

Our partner application with OceanBlue is pending, so we name it without a link. It has no medal because we found no current independent purity or oxidation result: no active IFOS listing on Oct 20, 2026, and Labdoor tests from 2014 to 2018 reported high oxidation. It ranks 7 of 19 on the same rubric as everyone else.
