Protein powder compared by type

9 protein powders across whey isolate, whey concentrate, plant and collagen, each priced per 25 g of protein rather than per scoop, with the testing on record and leucine where the label prints it.

Not a ranking and not a recommendation. Ask your clinician or dietitian how much protein you need, especially with kidney disease.

By type

Prices are one-time prices at the size shown, per 25 g of protein as each label prints it.

On a GLP-1How much protein to aim for while eating less

How we chose

The rule

Applied to our protein price index
  • Products chosen to cover each type (whey isolate, whey concentrate, plant, collagen peptides), with most from brands that do not pay us. Every product in the index is shown, so nothing is picked; within a type, lowest price per 25 g first.
  • Each product was read on its brand’s own page on the date shown: protein per serving and servings as the label prints them, the one-time price for one size, leucine only where the label prints it, and a certification only where the page states it for that product.
  • Who pays us does not change what is listed or the order. Every row’s link looks the same; a link that pays us is marked “Paid link”.

Not all protein is equal

What our protein pages record

The trials they cite
  • Collagen. 35 g of collagen peptides supplied 1.0 g leucine versus 3.0 g in 35 g whey; whey increased muscle thickness more, even when leucine was matched.
  • Pea and whey. No difference between pea and whey in the 12-week training trial or in older men's muscle protein synthesis; whey lowered muscle damage markers more in two trials.
  • Amounts. Servings of about 19–40 g protein in trials; gains plateaued at total protein intakes near 1.6 g/kg/day.
  • Daily intake. RDA 0.8 g/kg/day for healthy adults; ODS cites 1.2–2.0 g/kg/day for athletes. No UL has been set.

Questions

Common questions

Which protein powder is best?

This page does not pick one. It prices every powder in our index the same way, per 25 g of protein, so a bigger scoop or a cheaper tub does not hide the real cost. What each type has been studied for is on our whey, pea protein and collagen pages.

Why price per 25 g of protein instead of per scoop?

Scoops here hold 18 to 28 g of protein, so price per scoop is not comparable. Per 25 g, whey isolate runs $1.93 to $3.50, whey concentrate $1.73 to $2.10 and plant $1.08 to $2.84.

Does collagen count toward a protein target?

It is protein, but not equal protein for muscle. Our collagen page records: 35 g of collagen peptides supplied 1.0 g leucine versus 3.0 g in 35 g whey; whey increased muscle thickness more, even when leucine was matched.

Does Kymata earn money from these links?

When the brand is an active partner, yes: its link is marked "Paid link" and pays us a commission. Most products here are from brands that do not pay us; every row’s link looks the same, and the order (by type, then price per 25 g) does not change with who pays us.
