Sleep Trackers and Smart Rings: What They Measure, What They Cost and Which to Pick

Evidence-first guides to consumer sleep rings: what polysomnography studies show, what each ring costs to own, and an honest look at the Leep Ring against Oura, Ultrahuman, RingConn and Samsung.

Key takeaways

4 points
  • Sleep rings are good at sleep versus wake and overnight heart rate, and weaker at sleep stages, night-time wake-ups and older sleepers812.
  • Most validation studies are on Oura, and many were funded by Oura10; we found no published sleep-tracking validation for Leep, Ultrahuman Ring Air, RingConn Gen 2 or Galaxy Ring.
  • Ring prices run from $199 (Leep, no subscription) to $349 and up (Oura Ring 4, plus a $5.99/month membership), checked Oct 2026123.
  • None of these rings diagnoses sleep apnea; that needs a sleep study13. The Galaxy Ring is the only one with an FDA-cleared sleep apnea feature, and it screens for risk rather than diagnosing16.

If you just want to know which ring to buy, read the five-ring comparison. If you're weighing the cheapest no-subscription option, read the Leep Ring review. If you want to know whether any of the numbers mean anything, start with what sleep rings can and can't measure.

Rings infer sleep from movement, heart rate, HRV and temperature; only a sleep lab measures brain activity. Wearables in general overestimate total sleep and underestimate wake, with no device consistently best11.

What they cost to own (checked Oct 2026)

Ring price plus any required membership, from each brand's own pages:

  • Leep Ring: $199, no subscription115.
  • Oura Ring 4: from $349, plus $5.99/month or $69.99/year for full features23.
  • Ultrahuman Ring Air: $349, no subscription for ring data4.
  • RingConn Gen 2: $299, no subscription5.
  • Samsung Galaxy Ring: from $299.99 on Samsung's US page, no subscription fee67.

The evidence in one paragraph

In sleep-lab studies, Oura rings picked up sleep about 94 to 96% of the time but correctly flagged wake only about half to three-quarters of the time89. Total sleep time is usually close in healthy young adults, but in a 2026 study of people aged 56 to 80 the ring missed about 75 minutes of sleep and overcounted deep sleep12. The full breakdown, with funding for every study, is in our evidence explainer.

Regulatory and legal notes

  • Most consumer sleep rings are sold as general-wellness products. FDA's January 2026 general-wellness guidance describes its compliance policy for low-risk products that promote a healthy lifestyle, separate from medical-device clearance14.
  • The exception: in July 2026 FDA cleared Samsung's Sleep Apnea Feature v2.0 (K261011) to run on the Galaxy Ring as well as the Galaxy Watch. It is an over-the-counter screen for signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea in adults without a diagnosis, not a diagnosis16. Samsung said the ring would get it in a fall 2026 update17. See can a smartwatch or ring detect sleep apnea.
  • Leep states the Leep Ring is not a medical device, has not undergone medical-device certification and is not intended to diagnose, treat or monitor any condition15.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed with polysomnography or a home sleep apnea test interpreted by a clinician, not by a consumer wearable score13.
