Magnesium for anxiety: what the trend gets wrong

Magnesium glycinate is sold everywhere as "nature’s chill pill". It is cheap and safe at normal amounts, and low magnesium intake is common. But the evidence that it reduces anxiety is weak. Here is what the studies actually show.

Quick answer

The quick answer

  • A 2017 systematic review of 18 studies found about half showed some benefit on self-rated anxiety, all in people already prone to anxiety, and the studies were small and poor quality.
  • Magnesium may help most if your diet is low in it; it is not a substitute for anxiety care.
  • Lavender oil capsules (Silexan) and talking therapy have stronger evidence for anxiety.
  • Stay within the 350 mg/day supplement limit.

Story

Why this trend took off

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes, including nerve signalling, and people who run low often feel tense. That mechanism spread into a broad promise that magnesium calms anxiety.

The best summary of the trials found suggestive but low-quality evidence, only in people already prone to anxiety.

In depth

What the review found

  • 18 studies, all in groups prone to anxiety: mild anxiety, PMS, postpartum, high blood pressure.
  • About half the studies in each group reported some benefit on self-rated anxiety.
  • Many used magnesium combined with other ingredients, making it hard to credit magnesium alone.
  • The authors called the evidence suggestive and of poor quality, needing better trials.

    • Stay at or under 350 mg/day of supplemental magnesium unless a clinician says otherwise (US upper limit for supplements).
    • Kidney disease: ask first. Separate from thyroid medicine, some antibiotics and bisphosphonates by 2–4 hours.

    In the studies

    • The 18 studies in the 2017 systematic review gave magnesium alone or with up to 5 other ingredients; amounts varied.
