Lavender oil capsules for a worried mind: what the trials show

Silexan is a specific lavender oil preparation in capsules, studied in more than a thousand people with anxiety. It is not the same as aromatherapy oil. Here is what the trials found, and where it fits.

Quick answer

The quick answer

  • Across trials of 1,213 people, Silexan lowered anxiety scores more than placebo, with side effects similar to placebo.
  • In one trial in generalized anxiety disorder it did about as well as a standard prescription comparison.
  • It did not cause drowsiness or dependence in trials; burping with a lavender taste was common.
  • Persistent anxiety deserves a clinician. Cognitive behavioural therapy has strong evidence.

Story

Why it gets attention

Unlike many herbal products, Silexan has been tested in large, placebo-controlled trials, including one against a standard prescription medicine.

It is sold in the US over the counter. It is not a substitute for care when anxiety is severe, and it has not been studied in pregnancy.

The plan

If you want to try it

  1. Step 1Use the studied preparation

Silexan, the preparation used in the trials; aromatherapy oils are not for swallowing.

  2. Step 2Give it time

Trials ran 8–10 weeks; effects built over weeks.

  3. Step 3Keep the basics

Sleep, exercise, less caffeine and alcohol.

  4. Step 4See a clinician

If worry is constant, causes panic, or affects work and relationships.

    Lavender oil capsules (Silexan)

For a persistently worried, restless mind; does not cause drowsiness or dependence in trials.

What the research shows: A 2023 meta-analysis (1,213 people with anxiety disorders or subthreshold anxiety) found Silexan lowered anxiety scores more than placebo, with responders 1.34 times as common and side effects similar to placebo. In one trial it performed about as well as a standard prescription comparison. (PMID 36717399, PMID 24456909)

    • Burping with a lavender taste is the most common side effect.
    • Do not combine with sedatives or alcohol without asking; not studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

    In the studies

    • Trials gave 80 mg a day of Silexan for 8 to 10 weeks; one trial also tested 160 mg a day.

A record of what researchers gave, in whom; not a dose for you.

Left out

What we left out, and why

Lavender aromatherapy and sprays
Pleasant, but different from the oral preparation studied in trials.
CBD for anxiety
Small trials with mixed results, inconsistent product labeling and liver and drug-interaction concerns at higher doses.

Safety

Safety and interactions

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or feel unable to keep yourself safe, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the US) or your local emergency number now.
  • Never stop or change an antidepressant or other prescribed medicine without your prescriber; stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal effects and relapse.
  • Low mood, anxiety or exhaustion that lasts more than two weeks, or gets in the way of work, relationships or sleep, deserves a clinician. Talking therapies and medicines have strong evidence.
  • Not medical advice. Check with your clinician or pharmacist before starting supplements if you take prescription medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have liver, kidney or thyroid disease.
  • Supplements are not evaluated by the FDA to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
