The short answer
From 10 sourcesEgg white protein is a protein powder with little human trial data. In 30 female athletes, 15 g a day for 8 weeks did not beat a carbohydrate drink for strength or lean mass. A 2026 meta-analysis found benefits mainly in dialysis patients, with very-low-to-low certainty, and none shown for healthy adults.

What it is
Egg white protein is the protein fraction of egg whites, sold as a dried powder or as peptide hydrolysates, mostly as a fat-free, dairy-free protein source.

Doses studied in human trials
NIH ODS updated Apr 1, 2024Doses studied in human trials ranged from 3 g a day of an ovalbumin hydrolysate for 6 weeks to 24 g a day of egg white for 8 weeks in dialysis patients; egg white powders supplying 15 to 20 g of protein a day were studied for 8 weeks to 6 months, and 5.7 g a day of a hydrolysate for 36 weeks. These are research doses, not advice.85237
Intake reference: Protein RDA: 0.8 g/kg/day for healthy adults and 0.85 g/kg/day for adolescents. The NIH fact sheet notes that athletes may need more; it does not set an upper limit for protein.1 The Food and Nutrition Board has not set a UL for protein but advises caution with high intakes from foods plus supplements because data on adverse effects are limited. Who should be careful
4 groups- Egg allergy
- Egg is a major US food allergen, and the main egg white allergens are ovomucoid and ovalbumin. People with IgE-mediated egg allergy should avoid egg white protein products; reactions range from hives to anaphylaxis.910
- Kidney disease and dialysis
- The dialysis trials were run in supervised patients, and in one of them niacin lowered phosphorus more than egg white (4.38 vs 5.07 mg/dL). Protein and phosphorus targets in kidney disease are individual, so anyone with kidney disease should ask their care team before adding a protein powder.56
- Expecting extra muscle or heart benefits
- In the cited trials egg white protein did not beat a carbohydrate drink for strength or lean mass, and an ovalbumin hydrolysate did not change blood pressure.238
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children
- No egg white protein supplement studies in these groups were found in the sources reviewed, so safety of concentrated products is unknown.1

Know powder versus hydrolysate
Read the allergen statement
FDA requires packaged foods and dietary supplements to declare egg, in the ingredient list or in a 'Contains' statement.9
Regulatory status
Egg white protein is a food ingredient and has no FDA-approved health claim in the sources reviewed. The FDA allergen page notes that egg products themselves are regulated by USDA rather than FDA.9
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.
Common questions
6 answersWhat is egg white protein?
The protein fraction of egg whites, sold as a dried powder or as peptide hydrolysates. It is a fat-free, dairy-free protein source.4
Does egg white protein build more muscle than other proteins?
Not in the cited trials. In 30 female athletes, 15 g a day for 8 weeks did not beat a carbohydrate drink for strength or lean mass, and no trial here compared it with whey.2
Is egg white protein good for older adults?
A pilot of 29 women aged 60+ found no significant between-group differences after 6 months of 20 g protein a day, though it was under-recruited.3
Does egg white help people on dialysis?
A 2026 meta-analysis found higher serum albumin and lower phosphorus with egg white in dialysis patients, but the certainty was very low to low and the trials were small.6
Do egg peptides lower blood pressure?
