CBD, without the hype

What the research shows, how to check what is in the bottle, what changes on December 11, 2026, and which brands hold up on lab data.

What CBD is

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the main non-intoxicating cannabinoid in hemp. Only one CBD product is an approved medicine: Epidiolex, a prescription oral solution for seizures in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome and tuberous sclerosis complex.[1] Everything else sold as CBD is unapproved, and the FDA does not allow CBD in foods or dietary supplements.[2]

Quality varies widely. When JAMA tested 84 CBD products sold online, only about 31% were within 10% of the CBD on the label.[4] That is why our rankings start from each brand’s certificate of analysis and from tests that independent labs ran.

From December 11, 2026, federal law treats a finished hemp product as hemp only if the whole container holds no more than 0.4 mg of total THC.[3] This guide therefore favors THC-free products: isolate and broad-spectrum oils with THC not detected on the lab report.

Ranked by lab data

One 0–100 score from a published rubric (testing and COA transparency 30%, certifications 15%, independent potency 15%, THC compliance 15%, value 15%, ratings 10%). Commissions never change a score. Current top three overall: Joy Organics (86), NuLeaf Naturals (83.7), Extract Labs (79.5).

Buying basics

Cannabinoids, one by one

CBD · CannabidiolHuman evidence: Approved drug + RCTsThe main non-intoxicating cannabinoid in hemp. One CBD medicine, Epidiolex, is FDA-approved for three rare seizure disorders; evidence for anxiety and sleep at consumer doses is still thin.CBDA · Cannabidiolic acidHuman evidence: Preclinical onlyThe raw, acidic form of CBD in the living plant. Heat turns it into CBD. Most of the research is in animals; in dogs it appears in studies of a combined CBD + CBDA oil.CBG · CannabigerolHuman evidence: Pilot human studiesThe "parent" cannabinoid others are made from. One small 2024 trial found a single 20 mg dose lowered self-rated anxiety and stress versus placebo; that is most of the human evidence so far.CBN · CannabinolHuman evidence: Small RCTsFormed as THC ages and marketed for sleep. One 2024 trial saw fewer night awakenings at 20 mg; a 2026 insomnia trial found no change in its main outcome but some secondary sleep improvements at 300 mg.CBC · CannabichromeneHuman evidence: Preclinical onlyA minor cannabinoid found in full- and broad-spectrum extracts. Interesting in lab and animal studies, but there are no published human trials of CBC on its own.THCV · TetrahydrocannabivarinHuman evidence: Small RCTsA THC relative marketed for appetite and blood sugar. A 2016 pilot in type 2 diabetes saw lower fasting glucose at 5 mg twice daily. It is the cannabinoid here most exposed to the December 11, 2026 rules.CBDV · CannabidivarinHuman evidence: Pilot human studiesA CBD relative studied for seizures and autism. Brain-imaging studies show it changes signalling, but no trial has shown a clinical benefit yet, and a 162-person seizure trial has not posted results.

CBD for dogs

Dogs have their own trial data and their own risks (THC and xylitol are both toxic to dogs). Read the pet guide or see the ranked dog CBD oils.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBD legal?

Hemp-derived CBD is federally legal as hemp today. From December 11, 2026, a finished hemp product must contain no more than 0.4 mg of total THC per container to stay legal hemp, which rules out most full-spectrum products. States can be stricter.

Is any CBD product FDA-approved?

Only one: Epidiolex, a prescription CBD oral solution approved for seizures in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome and tuberous sclerosis complex. Over-the-counter CBD products are not FDA-approved.

Will CBD show up on a drug test?

Drug tests look for THC, not CBD. Full-spectrum products contain THC and can cause a positive result; isolate or broad-spectrum products with THC not detected on the COA carry much less risk, though no product is risk-free.

Does CBD interact with medicines?

Yes. CBD slows liver enzymes (CYP450) that clear many drugs. It has raised levels of the seizure drug clobazam and increased the effect of the blood thinner warfarin. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist before combining CBD with any regular medicine.

How do you rank CBD brands?

One 0–100 score from six published pillars: third-party testing and COA transparency (30%), certifications (15%), independent potency accuracy (15%), THC compliance (15%), value per mg (15%) and customer ratings (10%). Commissions are not an input.
