What the sleep studies show
CBD: a 300 mg dose did not change sleep in healthy adults in a sleep-lab study. An older study saw more sleep at 160 mg in insomnia. In a chart review, anxiety improved more reliably than sleep.[1][2][3]
CBN: in a 7-night trial, 20 mg reduced night awakenings and sleep disturbance versus placebo, and adding CBD did not improve on CBN alone. A 2026 insomnia trial found no change in time awake after falling asleep, though 300 mg shortened the time to fall asleep.[4][5]
Melatonin is the ingredient most often mislabelled: in Leafreport’s independent tests, two of three products containing melatonin were more than 10% off.[6]
How to choose a sleep product
Decide whether you want CBN, melatonin, or neither, and check the per-serving amounts on the label. Prefer THC-free formulas if you are drug tested or want a product that stays legal after December 11, 2026. Avoid combining with alcohol, sleeping pills or sedating medicines without medical advice.

Frequently asked questions
Is CBD or CBN better for sleep?
The best controlled data so far are for CBN at 20 mg (fewer night awakenings in one 7-night trial). CBD alone has mixed results. Neither is approved for insomnia.
Can I take CBD with melatonin?
Many products combine them. Melatonin amounts in CBD products are often inaccurate, so check the COA if the brand tests it, and ask a clinician if you take other medicines.
Will a sleep gummy make me groggy?
Drowsiness is CBD’s most common side effect in trials. Try a new product on a night when you do not need to drive early the next morning.
