CBG (Cannabigerol)

The "parent" cannabinoid others are made from. One small 2024 trial found a single 20 mg dose lowered self-rated anxiety and stress versus placebo; that is most of the human evidence so far.

What it is

CBG (from its acid form CBGA) is the precursor the plant converts into THC, CBD and CBC. Mature hemp holds little of it, so CBG products come from bred varieties or harvest timing.

How it works

In lab studies CBG acts on alpha-2 adrenergic and 5-HT1A receptors and weakly on cannabinoid receptors. Human relevance is unknown.

Human studies

In a double-blind crossover trial of 34 healthy adults, 20 mg of hemp-derived CBG reduced self-rated anxiety and stress compared with placebo, without measurable impairment. It is one small, short study.[1]

Doses used in studies

Studied dose: 20 mg once. No longer-term human dosing data.[1]

Drug interactions

Not studied in people. CBG is usually sold with CBD, so assume CBD’s CYP450 interactions apply.[2]

Safety

The 2024 trial reported no impairment on driving-related tasks after 20 mg. Longer-term safety is unknown.[1]

From December 11, 2026, federal law counts a finished hemp product as hemp only if the whole container holds no more than 0.4 mg of total THC (including THCA and THC-like cannabinoids). Full-spectrum products usually hold far more than that per bottle, so THC-free (isolate or verified broad-spectrum) products are the safe choice. State rules differ and can be stricter.[3]
