How it works

Visoluten (A-11) is a Cytomax natural polypeptide extract from the retinal and choroidal tissues of young calves, targeting human photoreceptors (rods and cones), retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and Müller glia to restore age-silenced gene expression governing visual signal transduction, photoreceptor renewal, and RPE-mediated outer segment phagocytosis. The retina is the most metabolically active tissue in the body per gram of tissue - it has the highest oxygen consumption rate of any organ and is therefore extremely vulnerable to age-related oxidative stress and vascular compromise.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in adults over 50 - involves progressive dysfunction and death of RPE cells underneath the fovea, with subsequent loss of cone photoreceptors responsible for central vision. Visoluten delivers short peptide signals (<10 kDa) from bovine retinal tissue that enter RPE and photoreceptor nuclei to reactivate: PEDF (pigment epithelium-derived factor, a neuroprotective and anti-angiogenic protein produced by RPE), rhodopsin (the photopigment of rod photoreceptors), CRALBP (cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein for visual cycle maintenance), and RPE65 (the critical isomerase in the visual cycle converting all-trans retinyl ester to 11-cis retinol for photoreceptor regeneration).

Visoluten addresses retinal aging at the gene expression level - not through antioxidant supplementation (lutein, zeaxanthin) or anti-VEGF injections. It is used alongside Normoftal (Lys-Glu synthetic dipeptide targeting the same tissue via a different mechanism) in Khavinson's ocular longevity protocols.

Khavinson's St. Petersburg group moved from organ extracts (Cytamins) to capsule complexes (Cytomaxes) to synthetic short peptides (Cytogens); most of the evidence comes from that one group, with little independent Western replication.

History of this molecule

Russian peptide ophthalmology is older than the US research-chem boom. Retinalamin (polypeptide extract of cattle retina) was a real hospital product for retinal dystrophy and degenerative disease in CIS practice. Visoluten is the oral Cytomax complex aimed at the same tissue class. Normoftal is the defined synthetic on the NPCRIZ cytogen list.

Western catalogs sometimes map Visoluten to Vilon because both start with V. That is a string-matching injury. Vilon is thymus KE. Visoluten is eye. If a blog table pairs Visoluten with Vilon, throw the table out.

The Khavinson frame is photoreceptor and retinal-pigment epithelium gene expression fading with age and light damage. The extract literature is stronger than the capsule-brand literature. Retinalamin papers should not be cited as if they were Visoluten RCTs, but they are the honest historical neighbor.

Henry-style English teaching will talk about vision peptides as epigenetic, not as anti-VEGF (that’s ranibizumab). Keep those mechanisms in different rooms.

Caveats

Retina Cytomax is not a US dietary-supplement monograph and not a drug. The tissue-extract model means lot-to-lot composition is a fingerprint, not a single CAS number. Some English-language bottles carry a “V2” label. Vita Peptides, for example, labels its own house line V2 (15 mg per capsule vs 10 mg in V1). No study compares V1 and V2 outcomes, and neither label is the subject of Khavinson’s 1990s papers. Animal-source capsules are inappropriate if the reader has a religious or allergy constraint on the source species. None of this replaces care for the actual organ disease.
