Lithothamnion (Aquamin)

Also called Aquamin, Aquamin F, red mineral algae, red algae calcium, seaweed-derived calcium, Lithothamnion calcareum.

The short answer

From 10 sources

Aquamin, the main Lithothamnion ingredient, is a calcium source. In a 24-month trial of 300 postmenopausal women it did not change bone density, though bone-turnover markers and LDL cholesterol fell versus control. Knee-arthritis and colon studies are small pilots, several funded by the maker. Calcium upper limits apply.

Key facts

What it is
A red-algae mineral powder (Aquamin) supplying calcium, magnesium and trace elements79
Bone density (300 women, 24 months)
No difference from control; bone-turnover markers fell more2
Cholesterol
LDL and total cholesterol were lower than control after 24 months (secondary analysis)3
Knee osteoarthritis
Two small maker-funded pilots with mixed results45
Calcium per dose
Trials gave 2.4 g Aquamin (about 800 mg calcium) a day; adult calcium upper limit is 2,000 to 2,500 mg a day from all sources31

What it is

Lithothamnion is a red marine alga; its mineral powder, sold as Aquamin, is rich in calcium and magnesium with trace elements.

How it works

Proposed

Aquamin supplies calcium and magnesium. In trials it lowered bone-turnover markers and parathyroid hormone after a meal, and in small colon studies it shifted gut bacteria and bile acids.267

What the numbers add up to

Each point is worked out from the data and the sources numbered on this page, with the arithmetic shown under it. It adds no new data and is not medical advice.

Calcium, not a bone builder

The largest trial found no change in bone density over 24 months, the same outcome many calcium trials report; only turnover markers moved.2

How we got this: Primary outcome of the 2014 trial

Joint evidence is maker-funded and tiny

Both knee trials were Marigot-funded pilots with 50 and 14 completers, and only within-group or secondary measures improved.45

Doses studied in human trials

Doses studied in human trials ranged from 2,400 mg of Aquamin a day for 12 weeks in knee osteoarthritis to the same 800 mg of calcium a day for 24 months in postmenopausal women.423

Starting from one medicine? The interaction checker rates how serious each pair is, on a curated list of 19 entries for 11 medicines. This cabinet has no severity rating: it lists every interaction row our supplement pages cite.

Not medical advice, and no dosing advice. An empty result means no row we cite names that pair, by name or through a drug class we can link the medicine to, not that a combination is safe. Where our sources name only a group of medicines we cannot match, the cabinet says so. Ask your pharmacist before you combine supplements and medicines.

Who should be careful

5 groups
High intakes
The adult UL is 2,500 mg/day (ages 19–50) and 2,000 mg/day (51+) from food and supplements combined. Very high blood calcium is rare in healthy people but can cause constipation, nausea, fatigue, kidney problems and heart-rhythm problems.1
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
The calcium RDA does not rise in pregnancy or breastfeeding (1,000 mg a day at ages 19–50, 1,300 mg at 14–18), and the upper limit stays 2,500 mg (19–50) or 3,000 mg (14–18). No Aquamin trials enrolled pregnant or breastfeeding women.1
Kidney stones
ODS notes that higher intakes of supplemental calcium might raise the risk of kidney stones; the upper limits rest on observational Women's Health Initiative data, although two later systematic reviews found no such link.1
Medicines
Dolutegravir, levothyroxine, quinolone antibiotics and lithium interact with calcium supplements.1
Before you start
Talk to your pharmacist or clinician before adding this supplement, especially if you take prescription medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a chronic health condition.1

How to read the label

3 checks
Count the calcium

Aquamin labels list calcium separately; add it to calcium from food and other supplements and compare with the adult upper limit of 2,000 to 2,500 mg a day.13

Check for added vitamin D

Some algae-calcium products add vitamin D; the trials here tested Aquamin itself against maltodextrin or placebo.24

Expect about one-third calcium by weight

Aquamin F, the seaweed ingredient, is about 32% calcium, which matches the trials' 800 mg of calcium per 2.4 g; the rest is magnesium and trace minerals.103

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.

Common questions

6 answers
Does algae calcium build bone?

In 300 postmenopausal women over 24 months, Aquamin calcium did not change bone density compared with control, although bone-turnover markers fell more.2

Does it help knee arthritis?

Two small pilots funded by the maker found some within-group or walking improvements, but pain scores did not clearly beat placebo.45

Is too much calcium a concern?

Yes. ODS sets the adult upper limit at 2,500 mg a day (ages 19 to 50) and 2,000 mg a day from 51, counting food and supplements, and lists medicines that interact with calcium.1

Is algae calcium safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No Aquamin trials enrolled pregnant or breastfeeding women. ODS sets the same calcium needs (1,000 mg a day at ages 19–50) and upper limit (2,500 mg) in pregnancy and breastfeeding as for other adults, counting food and supplements.1

Is it better absorbed than calcium carbonate?

One 12-woman single-dose study found different calcium and parathyroid hormone responses than calcium carbonate; no long-term absorption comparison exists here.6

What is Lithothamnion?

A red marine alga. Its mineral powder, sold as Aquamin, supplies calcium and magnesium plus trace elements.79
