Fucoidan

Also called fucoidans, mekabu fucoidan, wakame fucoidan, Undaria pinnatifida extract, oligo-fucoidan, low-molecular-weight fucoidan.

The short answer

From 19 sources

Fucoidan trials are small and use different seaweed extracts. In 70 older Japanese adults it raised flu-vaccine antibody responses, and oligo-fucoidan improved grip strength in older adults. Blood-sugar results conflict: a 72-person Australian trial found no change in insulin resistance, while smaller trials reported shifts. Cancer trials used it alongside chemotherapy.

What it is

Fucoidan is a sulfated sugar chain (polysaccharide) extracted from brown seaweeds such as wakame and mozuku.

How it works

Proposed

In trials, fucoidan shifted immune markers (NK cell activity, vaccine antibodies, interferon-producing T cells) and gut bacteria; whether these changes lead to fewer infections or better health has not been shown.2678

What the numbers add up to

Each point is worked out from the data and the sources numbered on this page, with the arithmetic shown under it. It adds no new data and is not medical advice.

Same name, different molecules

Trials used mekabu, Undaria, mozuku and low-molecular-weight oligo-fucoidan, so a result with one extract does not automatically apply to another.28910

How we got this: Forms named in the cited trial abstracts

Blood sugar: the biggest trial was null

The 72-person Australian trial found no change in insulin resistance; a 25-person Mexican trial reported insulin rising, and a 70-person Chinese trial reported smaller glucose-marker rises.347

Studied doses in research, not advice. These are amounts used in research, not personal advice. Your clinician or pharmacist can say what fits you.

Doses studied in human trials

Doses studied in human trials ranged from 300 mg a day of mekabu fucoidan for 4 weeks to 1,000 mg a day for 12 weeks in prediabetes and 3 g a day in a mozuku beverage for 12 weeks. Trials alongside cancer treatment used 8–8.8 g a day of low-molecular-weight fucoidan for 3 to 6 months.2781716

Starting from one medicine? The interaction checker rates how serious each pair is, on a curated list of 19 entries for 11 medicines. This cabinet has no severity rating: it lists every interaction row our supplement pages cite.

Not medical advice, and no dosing advice. An empty result means no row we cite names that pair, by name or through a drug class we can link the medicine to, not that a combination is safe. Where our sources name only a group of medicines we cannot match, the cabinet says so. Ask your pharmacist before you combine supplements and medicines.

Who should be careful

5 groups
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children
No trial here enrolled pregnant or breastfeeding people or children, and NCCIH notes many supplements are untested in these groups. LactMed's seaweed record finds no data on organic seaweed components in milk, but iodine and heavy metals from seaweed pass into breast milk.112
Bleeding risk and surgery
Fucoidan shortened clot lysis time in a 5-week volunteer study. NCCIH advises telling your health care providers about every supplement, especially before surgery or with blood-thinning medicines.151
Liver
LiverTox has no fucoidan record; its kelp record (kelp contains fucoidan) rates kelp E, an unlikely cause of liver injury. Liver tests did not differ from placebo at 1 g a day for 90 days.133
Thyroid conditions
Whole kelp and seaweed are rich in iodine and in large amounts can harm people with thyroid conditions (LiverTox). No fucoidan trial here measured thyroid function.13
Cancer treatment
Cancer trials gave fucoidan alongside chemotherapy, chemoradiotherapy or chemoembolization under specialist care; they do not show it works on its own. Discuss any supplement with the oncology team.51617
Talk to your pharmacist or clinician before starting a supplement, especially if you take prescription medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.

Common questions

6 answers
Does fucoidan boost immunity?

It raised flu-vaccine antibodies in 70 older adults and NK cell activity in a small pilot, but no trial here measured fewer infections.28

Does fucoidan help blood sugar?

Results conflict: no change in insulin resistance in the largest trial (72 people), small shifts in glucose markers in a 70-person prediabetes trial.37

Does fucoidan help muscle or exercise performance?

Evidence is thin and mixed. In older adults, oligo-fucoidan improved grip strength over 12 weeks. In young adults, 1 g a day did not add strength during 6 weeks of resistance training (though lean mass rose in 10 people), did not change sprint power after 2 weeks, and did not change 3-week training gains.9191810

Does fucoidan affect blood clotting?

Possibly. In volunteers, 400 mg a day of Laminaria fucoidan for 5 weeks shortened the time to break down a clot and raised prostacyclin, which damps platelet activity. No trial has tested fucoidan with blood thinners, so tell your clinician if you use both or before surgery.15

Is fucoidan safe?

No adverse events were reported in 12-week trials at up to 3 g a day, and adverse events matched placebo at 8.8 g a day for 6 months. LiverTox rates kelp, which contains fucoidan, an unlikely cause of liver injury. Fucoidan may affect clotting, so mention it before surgery or with blood thinners.89161315

Is fucoidan used with cancer treatment?

Only in trials alongside standard care. Low-molecular-weight fucoidan raised disease control with chemotherapy (54 patients) and with liver chemoembolization (82 patients; 95% vs 80%), and cut rash and fatigue during rectal chemoradiotherapy (87 patients), but survival did not differ where reported. All three involved the same Taiwanese maker, Hi-Q Marine Biotech.51617

allAudit update. PubMed search for fucoidan trials through 2026: added rows for a 2025 liver-cancer chemoembolization trial and a 2023 rectal-cancer chemoradiotherapy trial (both marked as supervised medical uses, as is now the 2017 colorectal chemotherapy row), a 2023 high-intensity exercise crossover and a 2025 resistance-training trial. Added interactions: a 2018 pharmacokinetic study (no change in letrozole or tamoxifen levels) and a clotting caution from a 2013 volunteer study. Added LactMed (seaweed) breastfeeding data, a LiverTox (kelp) liver note, thyroid, bleeding and cancer-care notes, two FAQ items (replacing 'What is fucoidan?', which the page already answers), page questions and the immune hub link. A 2024 pain meta-analysis was not added (mostly preclinical).Writer: Kymata Health EditorialTrigger: A–Z audit against docs/supplements/AUDIT-STANDARD.md
allInitial editorial evidence review. Every PMID checked against NCBI E-utilities esummary (title, year, journal; none retracted) and each cited abstract read; numbers taken from the abstracts (full text used only where noted for participant counts or funding). Funding disclosed per study: Marinova Pty. Ltd. (2019 insulin trial; 2023 training trial per Europe PMC), Hi-Q Marine Biotech (asthma trial; academia-industry cooperation in the colorectal trial, full text), South Product (mozuku NK pilot), Chinese public and university grants (H. pylori trial), I-Shou and National Cheng Kung universities (older-adult trial, Europe PMC); the other abstracts name no funder (disclosed as not stated). No fucoidan-specific page exists on our approved safety sources, so safety rows use only NCCIH's general supplement guidance. Where to buy: Life Extension Optimized Fucoidan With Maritech (label checked 2026-10-15).Writer: Kymata Health EditorialTrigger: new page
