Cannabigerol (CBG)

Also called CBG, hemp CBG, CBG isolate.

The short answer

From 9 sources

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a minor hemp cannabinoid marketed for calm, focus and sleep. Human data are three small trials: 20 mg lowered anxiety and stress versus placebo in 34 healthy adults, single doses up to 200 mg showed no robust effects, and 25–50 mg daily for 4 weeks did not beat placebo for sleep in veterans (grade D).

Key facts

What it is
A minor cannabinoid from hemp that does not produce a high at the doses tested12
Anxiety and stress
A single 20 mg dose lowered anxiety and stress versus placebo in a 34-person crossover trial1
Dose-ranging
Single doses of 25 to 200 mg were well tolerated in 12 adults, with no robust effects2
Sleep
In 63 veterans with sleep problems, 25 mg then 50 mg daily for 4 weeks improved sleep scores no more than placebo7
Sport
CBG is prohibited by WADA, and it was found in urine of people using a broad-spectrum CBD product3
Typical use
Surveyed users reported typical doses of 10 to 12 mg, mainly for sleep, pain and anxiety4

What it is

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid from hemp, sold as an isolate or in broad-spectrum CBD products.

How it works

Proposed

CBG is a minor cannabinoid; animal studies suggested anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects, which prompted the first human trial. How it acts in people is not established, and in a dose-ranging study effects did not rise consistently with dose.12

What the numbers add up to

Each point is worked out from the data and the sources numbered on this page, with the arithmetic shown under it. It adds no new data and is not medical advice.

Two studies, opposite impressions

A 20 mg dose lowered anxiety in a remote field trial, but a lab study of 25 to 200 mg found minimal and inconsistent subjective effects, even a drop in calm at 100 mg.12

Studied doses

Doses used in research, shown against the official limits. They describe the studies, not a recommendation for you.

Studied doses in research, not advice. These are amounts used in research, not personal advice. Your clinician or pharmacist can say what fits you.

Doses studied in human trials

Doses studied in human trials ranged from 20 to 200 mg: single doses of 20 mg of a hemp-derived tincture (anxiety) and 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg of isolate in oil (safety and blood levels), and 25 mg daily for 2 weeks then 50 mg daily for 2 weeks in a sleep trial in veterans.127

Starting from one medicine? The interaction checker rates how serious each pair is, on a curated list of 19 entries for 11 medicines. This cabinet has no severity rating: it lists every interaction row our supplement pages cite.

Not medical advice, and no dosing advice. An empty result means no row we cite names that pair, by name or through a drug class we can link the medicine to, not that a combination is safe. Where our sources name only a group of medicines we cannot match, the cabinet says so. Ask your pharmacist before you combine supplements and medicines.

Who should be careful

4 groups
Athletes in tested sports
WADA prohibits cannabinoids other than CBD, including CBG, and CBG appeared in the urine of 42 to 74% of people using a broad-spectrum CBD product.3
Legal status (United States)
Hemp-derived CBG is sold under the 2018 farm bill's hemp definition. A November 2025 federal law narrows that definition from November 12, 2026, excluding final products with more than 0.4 mg of total THC per container and cannabinoids made outside the plant; state laws also differ.6
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children
No study has enrolled pregnant or breastfeeding women or children, and LactMed has no CBG entry. The FDA strongly advises against CBD, THC and marijuana in any form during pregnancy or breastfeeding and warns of possible risks from cannabis products.9127
Long-term use
The longest trial lasted 4 weeks (25 mg, then 50 mg daily) and found CBG well tolerated; longer use has not been studied.72
Talk to your pharmacist or clinician before starting a supplement, especially if you take prescription medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.

Common questions

6 answers
Does CBG help anxiety?

In one crossover trial, a single 20 mg dose lowered anxiety and stress versus placebo in 34 healthy adults. No trial has tested repeated use or people with anxiety disorders.1

Does CBG help you sleep?

Not on current evidence. In a 4-week trial in 63 veterans with sleep problems, 25 mg then 50 mg daily improved sleep scores no more than placebo. The trial was smaller than planned, and its lead author works for the sponsor company.7

Does CBG get you high?

No subjective drug effects or impairment were found after 20 mg, and effects were minimal at single doses up to 200 mg.12

Is CBG safe?

Single doses up to 200 mg caused no drug-related adverse events or liver test abnormalities in 12 adults, and 25–50 mg daily for 4 weeks was well tolerated in 63 veterans. Use beyond 4 weeks has not been studied.27

What is the difference between CBG and CBD?

Both are hemp cannabinoids. WADA allows CBD but prohibits CBG, and CBG has only three small human trials in our sources.3127

Can CBG fail a drug test?

CBG is on WADA's prohibited list, and it was detected in urine of people using a broad-spectrum CBD product, more so after exercise. THC was not detected in that study.3
