Betalains (Betalain-Rich Beetroot Concentrate)

Also called betanin, betacyanins, betalain-rich concentrate, BRC, beetroot red pigment.

The short answer

From 9 sources

Betalains are the pigments that make beetroot red. Unlike beet juice, the concentrate in the triathlete trial contained no nitrate. Small crossover trials in endurance athletes at 100 mg a day reported slightly faster time trials and lower effort, though one power gain was tiny. Betanin is poorly absorbed, and some people pass red urine.

Key facts

Nitrate-free
The concentrate tested in the triathlete trial contained no sugars or nitrates, so its effects there were not from dietary nitrate1
Triathletes
After 7 days at 100 mg/day, 10-km run time was 49.5 vs 50.8 min with placebo in 22 triathletes1
Cyclists
After 7 days at 100 mg/day, 30-minute time-trial power was 231.6 vs 225.3 W with placebo (p = 0.050), a very small effect (d = 0.02)3
Absorption
Betanin was undetectable in plasma after beet juice providing about 194 mg; about 0.28% of betalains were recovered in urine after beet juice67
Red urine
Red or pink urine after beetroot (beeturia) is reported in 10–14% of people and is more common in iron deficiency8

What it is

Betalains are the red and yellow pigments of beetroot (mainly betanin), sold as nitrate-free betalain-rich beetroot concentrates.

How it works

Proposed

Trial authors describe betalain-rich concentrate as having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Because betanin is barely detectable in blood after beetroot, how the concentrate could affect exercise is unclear; trial authors proposed effects on muscle damage, blood flow and exercise efficiency without raising nitric-oxide markers.2367

What the numbers add up to

Each point is worked out from the data and the sources numbered on this page, with the arithmetic shown under it. It adds no new data and is not medical advice.

Effects are small and from one product type

Faster time trials came from three small trials of betalain-rich concentrates, two from one research group; the cycling power gain had an effect size of 0.02.123

How we got this: Evidence table on this page

Low blood levels raise a question

Betanin is barely detectable in plasma after beetroot products, so how the concentrate acts in muscle is not explained.67

Studied doses

Doses used in research, shown against the official limits. They describe the studies, not a recommendation for you.

Studied doses in research, not advice. These are amounts used in research, not personal advice. Your clinician or pharmacist can say what fits you.

Doses studied in human trials

Doses studied in human trials ranged from about 33 mg of betalains a day (from dragon fruit powder, 14 days) and about 50 mg (a heart-marker pilot) to 100 mg/day of betalain-rich concentrate for 6–7 days before exercise testing, with a 50 mg pre-test dose in some trials. These are research doses, not recommendations.1359

Red urine (beeturia)

2 notes

A known effect of beetroot pigments.

How common
Beeturia, pink or red urine after beetroot, is said to occur in 10–14% of people and is more common in iron deficiency and malabsorption.8
Why it varies
In 100 volunteers, urinary pigment recovery after 60 mg of beetroot extract varied widely; the authors suggest stomach acidity and emptying rate drive the differences.8

Betalain concentrate vs beet juice

The triathlete trial used a concentrate with no nitrate or sugar. Beetroot juice and beet powders also contain nitrate, so their effects are not interchangeable with betalain concentrates.16

Label dose vs studied dose

Exercise trials used 100 mg/day of betalain-rich concentrate for about a week, plus a pre-test dose in some trials.123

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.

Common questions

7 answers
Do betalains improve endurance?

Small crossover trials at 100 mg/day reported slightly faster time trials and lower perceived effort, but the cycling power gain was tiny and a single dose did not improve running economy or VO2max.134

Are betalains absorbed?

Poorly. Betanin was undetectable in plasma after beet juice, and well under 1% appeared in urine.67

Do betalains help blood vessels or blood pressure?

In 18 healthy adults, dragon fruit powder with 33 mg of betalains a day improved blood-vessel dilation within hours and at 14 days, without changing blood pressure. A 2-week pilot in men with coronary artery disease reported lower blood pressure.95

Are betalain supplements safe?

The cited exercise trials lasted about a week, and their abstracts report no safety data. Pink or red urine (beeturia) is the known effect of beetroot pigments. There are no long-term safety data.138

Are betalains the same as beetroot juice?

No. Beet juice provides nitrate as well as betalains, while the concentrate used in the triathlete trial contained no nitrate.16

What are betalains?

The red-violet (betacyanin) and yellow (betaxanthin) pigments of beetroot; betanin is the main one.68

Why is my urine pink after beets?

This is beeturia, reported in 10–14% of people and more common with iron deficiency.8
