How We Score Blood-Test Services: The 100-Point Rubric

The published rubric behind our blood-test rankings: 60 points for value and lab quality, 40 for the company behind the test. Medals need 80 or more, and payment never changes a score.

Key takeaways

4 points
  • Value and lab (60 points): price per biomarker 20, breadth 10, retest cost 10, clinician review 5, named national lab 15.
  • Company foundation (40 points): founders 10, funding 8, years selling 8, privacy 6, legal record 8.
  • Medals go to the top three scores of 80 or more; ties are broken by the value subtotal.
  • Every input comes from the company’s own pages, court records or press coverage, with the source listed12.

Value and lab: 60 points

Price per biomarker uses the broadest standard blood panel each company sells, with every required fee added: membership when a member price is used, draw fees and physician fees. We divide by the company’s own biomarker count. Counts are not directly comparable, because some companies count calculated ratios and each urinalysis item as markers; we score them as published and say so3.

  • Price per biomarker (20): $2.50 or less 20; up to $4 16; up to $6 12; up to $10 8; more 4.
  • Breadth (10): 150+ markers 10; 100-149 8; 75-99 6; 50-74 4; fewer 2.
  • Retest (10): second test included 10; repeat panel up to $250 7; up to $400 4; more 2.
  • Clinician review (5): the company says a licensed clinician reviews results as part of the price 5; ordering only 3; none 0.
  • Lab (15): a named national CLIA-certified lab (Quest, Labcorp or BioReference) 15; a CLIA lab not named, or the company’s own 10; not stated 5.

The company behind the test: 40 points

A cheap panel from a company that cannot be checked is not good value. We look for named founders with records we can verify outside the company’s own site, money behind the business, time in market, how it treats health data, and its legal record.

  • Founders (10): named, with verifiable medical or scientific credentials 10; verifiable business or engineering track records 7; thin record or first name only 4.
  • Funding (8): $25M+ disclosed, or a public company 8; under $25M disclosed 5; self-funded and operating 10+ years 3.
  • Years selling tests to consumers (8): 10+ 8; 5-9 6; 3-4 4; under 3 2.
  • Privacy (6): a HIPAA notice or consumer-health-data policy plus a no-sale or no-advertising-use statement 6; otherwise 3.
  • Legal record, last 7 years (8): none found 8; named defendant in a false-advertising suit, whatever the outcome 4; consumer class actions over product claims 3; a data breach affecting customers or a regulator action 2.

Medals, ties and affiliate links

Medals go to the top three scores that reach 80. Ties are broken by the value subtotal. Only services with an active affiliate program get a paid link, marked as such; the rest get plain links in the references. Being a partner earns no points, and partners lose points like anyone else: our partner Mito Health scores 7 of 10 on founders and 5 of 8 on funding45.

How we make money: Mito Health, Everlywell and HealthLabs.com are affiliate partners, so Kymata Health may earn a commission if you buy through their links on this page, at no extra cost to you; the owner of Kymata Health also pays for a Mito membership. We have no affiliate relationship with Function Health, Superpower, Ulta Lab Tests, Quest Health or InsideTracker. Payment never changes a score: every service is scored on the same published rubric.

What this rubric does not measure

It does not test accuracy: all five picks send blood to Quest Diagnostics, so the analysis runs in the same national lab network. It does not judge the advice apps give on top of results, and it is not medical advice.

How this was checked: researched and written by our editorial team from each company’s own pages, court records and press coverage, read on Oct 13, 2026. It is not medical advice.
