Registered summary

Hyperlipidemia is the main driver of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), both through direct effects and as trigger of the chronic inflammation behind a cardiovascular health-to-disease transition. While lipid-lowering is an effective way to reduce the ASCVD risk, the residual risk remains high. In addition, a substantial proportion of ASCVD events occur in the absence of overt hyperlipidemia. Several lines of evidence ranging from experimental models to population studies and interventional clinical trials support chronic inflammation as the causal residual risk of CVD. Registered summary

Cancer cachexia is a common and prognostically relevant complication of advanced malignancies, characterized by systemic inflammation, increased catabolism, and reduced nutritional intake, leading to a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, physical performance, and quality of life. Muscle wasting negatively affects the tolerability and efficacy of oncological therapies and exacerbates distressing symptoms such as fatigue. Consequently, international guidelines recommend combined nutritional and exercise interventions as key components of supportive cancer care. The full summary is on the listing.

Perinatal depression and anxiety (PDA) are the leading causes of maternal mortality in developed countries. Women with a history of depression have a 20 fold higher risk of PDA at subsequent pregnancies. The adverse outcomes extend beyond maternal well-being to long-term deficits in children and families. The gut-brain axis is a newly recognized key player in mental health disorders. Specifically, the microbial composition of the gut along with their metabolites are directly involved in disease onset and course. The full summary is on the listing.
