Lists people 18 to 70; healthy volunteers accepted. Conditions: Cushing Syndrome.

  • Aged 18-70 years
  • Agreement to adhere to Lifestyle Considerations throughout the study.
  • Evidence of acceptable laboratory testing results within four weeks of the first test day, as shown by medical record review:

4 more inclusion criteria and the exclusion criteria are on the listing.

What it tests, as registered

Desmopressin; Dexamethasone

Registered summary

Background: Cushing syndrome (CS) is a set of diseases that develop when the body produces too much adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH stimulates the production of a hormone called cortisol. Excess cortisol can cause serious issues, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, weight gain, and mood changes. Diagnosing CS early can be difficult. One test used to diagnose CS, the desmopressin (Desmo) stimulation test (DesmoST), has not been studied in enough people to know how accurate it is. Objective: To find ways to improve the DesmoST. Registered summary

This study is designed as a single institution trial. The study utilizes safe and clinically-validated tools for preoperative workup of patients with small pituitary tumors. DDAVP stimulation and 18F-labeled fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG) uptake for PET-imaging will be used to detect MRI-negative pituitary adenomas in patients with Cushing s disease. Patients who have MRI-negative pituitary microadenomas will undergo FDG PET-imaging with DDAVP stimulation. Intravenous FDG will be given approximately four hours following DDAVP administration. Registered summary

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a process that uses a pump that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during cardiac surgery to maintain blood circulation and oxygenation. Using CPB during cardiac surgery can result in complications with blood clotting. Blood clotting is achieved when molecules in the blood, called platelets, are able to form together with the help of other clotting factors to form a clot. A drug called desmopressin (DDAVP) is used to help blood clot properly by increasing the amount of clotting factors in the blood. The full summary is on the listing.
