What the rows share
From the rowsThe best-graded row, grade C, is a randomized trial of 164 people (2022) and found no difference.
The rows run from 74 to 164 people, published from 2022 to 2026: 2 single studies.
The rows
2 no difference- CGrade CArterial stiffness and blood pressure · No difference
RCT · n 164 · 2022 · Adults with overweight or mild obesity, mean age 63 (four arms: citrate, oxide, sulfate, placebo)
450 mg/day magnesium · 24 weeks
Citrate did not change carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity or blood pressure versus placebo. It raised plasma and urinary magnesium, with a larger urinary rise than oxide or sulfate.

- CGrade CCalcification propensity and arterial stiffness in type 2 diabetes · No difference
RCT · n 74 · 2026 · Older adults (median age 72) with type 2 diabetes, arterial calcification in the legs and stiff arteries (Netherlands)
About 350 mg/day magnesium (3 × 117 mg) · 6 months
No improvement in serum calcification propensity (T50). Pulse wave velocity rose slightly versus placebo (0.8 m/s, P = 0.021), but not after adjusting for baseline differences. Urinary magnesium rose but serum magnesium did not.
