Bacillus coagulans (spore-forming probiotic)

Also called Heyndrickxia coagulans, Weizmannia coagulans, Lactobacillus sporogenes, Unique IS2, MTCC 5856, LactoSpore.

The short answer

From 15 sources

Bacillus coagulans is a spore-forming probiotic bacterium, recently renamed Heyndrickxia coagulans. Strain-specific trials, most with authors from ingredient makers, report better IBS symptoms, stool frequency and bloating at 1 to 6 billion CFU a day. Results belong to each strain, and independent replication is limited.

Key facts

What it is
A spore-forming, lactic-acid-producing probiotic species; MTCC 5856 is described as thermostable4
Strain matters
A 2023 network meta-analysis (81 RCTs, 9,253 adults with IBS) ranked MTCC 5856 and Unique IS2 among the most effective strains for abdominal pain7
2026 meta-analysis
A strain-specific meta-analysis found Unique IS2 improved core IBS symptoms (2 trials, adults and children) and MTCC 5856 improved IBS quality of life8
Beyond the gut
Single small trials report better sleep efficiency (IDCC 1201, 5 billion CFU) and fewer cold symptoms (SANK70258); grade D1415
Funding
Every trial listed here has authors from, or funding by, companies: ingredient makers (Unique Biotech, Sami-Sabinsa, Kerry, Advanced Enzyme Technologies, Ildong Bioscience, Mitsubishi Chemical) or, for the 2025 Unique IS2 trial, PepsiCo and a contract research organisation123456131415
Canada
Health Canada's probiotics monograph excludes B. coagulans, so products are licensed individually; one licence contraindicates immune-compromised conditions1110

What it is

Bacillus coagulans is a spore-forming, lactic-acid-producing bacterium sold as a shelf-stable probiotic supplement.

How it works

Proposed

Like other probiotics, B. coagulans is proposed to work by shifting the gut's microbial community, producing beneficial substances and influencing immune responses; NCCIH notes different probiotics may act in different ways. In a 2025 trial, the GBI-30, 6086 strain raised Bacteroides and lowered Clostridium, Blautia and Ruminococcus without broader microbiome change.93

What the numbers add up to

Each point is worked out from the data and the sources numbered on this page, with the arithmetic shown under it. It adds no new data and is not medical advice.

Evidence is strain-by-strain

Pooled analyses credit specific strains (Unique IS2, MTCC 5856) with specific IBS outcomes, so results for one B. coagulans product do not transfer to another.78

How we got this: 2023 network and 2026 strain-specific meta-analysis abstracts

Maker-run trials dominate

All nine trials listed here have authors from, or funding by, companies, most of them the makers of the strain tested (Unique Biotech, Sami-Sabinsa, Kerry, Advanced Enzyme Technologies, Ildong Bioscience, Mitsubishi Chemical).123456131415

Doses studied in human trials

Doses studied in human trials ranged from 1 billion CFU a day (GBI-30, 6086) to 6 billion CFU a day (LBSC) for 4 weeks to about 13 weeks; most trials used 2 billion CFU a day, and a sleep trial used 5 billion CFU a day.12345614

Not medical advice, and no dosing advice. An empty result means no row we cite names that pair, by name or through a drug class we can link the medicine to, not that a combination is safe. Where our sources name only a group of medicines we cannot match, the cabinet says so. Ask your pharmacist before you combine supplements and medicines.

Who should be careful

5 groups
Weakened immune system or serious illness
NCCIH says the risk of harm from probiotics, including infection, is greater with severe illness or a compromised immune system. A Health Canada-licensed B. coagulans product is contraindicated with immune-compromised conditions such as AIDS, lymphoma or long-term corticosteroid use.910
Premature infants
Severe or fatal infections have been reported in premature infants given probiotics, and the FDA has warned health care providers about this risk (NCCIH).9
Fever, bloody diarrhoea or severe abdominal pain
Health Canada licence wording: consult a health care practitioner before use with fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhoea or severe abdominal pain, and stop if digestive upset persists beyond 3 days.10
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Our safety sources give no B. coagulans-specific data for pregnancy or breastfeeding; NCCIH advises consulting a health care provider before using any probiotic supplement.9
Product contents
NCCIH notes some probiotic products have contained microorganisms other than those on the label, which can pose health risks.9
Talk to your pharmacist or clinician before starting a supplement, especially if you take prescription medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.

Common questions

5 answers
Can children take Bacillus coagulans?

One trial gave Unique IS2 chewable tablets once daily for 8 weeks to 141 children aged 4–12 with IBS and found less pain and better stools than placebo. Premature infants are a different case: NCCIH reports severe or fatal infections in premature infants given probiotics.129

Is it safe to take Bacillus coagulans every day?

Trials of 1–6 billion CFU a day for 4 to about 13 weeks reported no severe adverse events, but longer use has not been studied. NCCIH says infection risk is higher with severe illness or a weakened immune system, and one Health Canada licence contraindicates immune-compromised conditions.1613910

How is Bacillus coagulans different from other probiotics?

It forms spores, unlike most Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium products. NCCIH notes that effects found for one probiotic do not carry over to others, and B. coagulans results are strain-specific.97

Which Bacillus coagulans strain has the most evidence for IBS?

Unique IS2. A 2026 strain-specific meta-analysis found it improved core IBS symptoms across two placebo-controlled trials (249 adults and children), while MTCC 5856 improved only IBS quality of life. A 2023 network meta-analysis also ranked MTCC 5856 and Unique IS2 among the best strains for abdominal pain. Maker-linked trials dominate.87

Why do labels say Heyndrickxia coagulans?

The species has been reclassified; recent trials name it Heyndrickxia (Bacillus) coagulans, so labels may use either name.3
