Magnesium for Sleep: Small Effects in Trials, and Which Form Was Tested
Magnesium shortened time to fall asleep in small trials of older adults, and bisglycinate and L-threonate each have one or two placebo-controlled sleep trials. The effects were small, and no form has been tested head to head.

Key takeaways
From 5 sources- In older adults with insomnia, oral magnesium shortened time to fall asleep by 17.4 minutes versus placebo across 3 small trials, with low to very low quality evidence1.
- Magnesium bisglycinate providing 250 mg of magnesium a day lowered insomnia severity a little more than placebo over 4 weeks in 155 adults who slept poorly2.
- Magnesium L-threonate improved ring-measured deep and REM sleep scores in a 21-day trial, but a 6-week trial found no difference in ring-measured sleep34.
- Each form was tested against placebo, not against other forms, so no trial shows which magnesium is best for sleep123.
- The adult upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medicines is 350 mg a day5.

What the sleep trials found
A 2021 meta-analysis pooled 3 randomized trials of older adults with insomnia. Magnesium cut the time to fall asleep by 17.4 minutes compared with placebo, while total sleep time rose 16 minutes, a change that was not statistically significant1. The trials were small and at moderate to high risk of bias1.
In a 2025 trial of 155 healthy adults aged 18 to 65 who reported poor sleep, magnesium bisglycinate at 250 mg of elemental magnesium a day lowered the Insomnia Severity Index by 3.9 points, against 2.3 points with placebo, after 4 weeks2. The authors rated it a small effect, and other psychological outcomes did not differ2.
For magnesium L-threonate, a 21-day trial in 80 adults aged 35 to 55 found better ring-measured deep and REM sleep scores and better self-rated daytime functioning than placebo3. A 6-week trial of 2 g a day in 100 adults found no difference in ring-measured sleep, and only some self-rated measures improved4.
Glycinate, threonate or another form?
The bisglycinate trial dosed 250 mg of elemental magnesium a day2. The threonate trials dosed the whole compound, 1 g or 2 g a day, and 1 g supplies only about 83 mg of magnesium34. The older-adult meta-analysis pooled trials that used different forms1.
Because none of these trials compared forms directly, the choice between them comes down to dose, tolerance and price rather than proven sleep differences123. Compare the forms on the magnesium glycinate, magnesium L-threonate and magnesium pages, or read glycinate vs citrate and the best magnesium supplement by form.
Reading the label: elemental magnesium
A label may give the weight of the whole compound, the elemental magnesium it provides, or both. The adult upper limit of 350 mg a day counts elemental magnesium from supplements and medicines only, not magnesium in food5.
The arithmetic is worked through in magnesium upper limit and label math.
Who should be careful
If your kidneys are impaired, excess magnesium can build up, whatever the form5. Magnesium binds tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics and oral bisphosphonates such as alendronate, so doses need to be spaced apart; a pharmacist can set the timing5.
Too much magnesium from supplements commonly causes loose stools, nausea or cramps5.
