AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound)

Also called AHCC, active hexose correlated compound, shiitake mycelia extract, Lentinula edodes mycelia extract, cultured shiitake mycelia extract.

The short answer

From 14 sources

AHCC trials are small but include two placebo-controlled studies in patients. In 50 women with persistent high-risk HPV, 63.6% of those finishing AHCC cleared the virus vs 10.5% on placebo. In 98 pancreatic cancer patients on chemotherapy it reduced taste problems but not anaemia. Healthy-volunteer studies measured immune cells only.

How we chose: Momentous is the partner brand we list first, so its product leads whenever the Where to buy list has one for this compound or a form in our Forms table. Otherwise, among partner brands that passed our vetting without conditions (others only when none sells it), the first product in that list whose name matches a form in our Forms table, else the first one listed. Not a claim that it works: check the amount per serving against the studied doses and limits.

What it is

AHCC is a standardised extract of cultured shiitake (Lentinula edodes) mushroom mycelia, made by a Japanese company.

How it works

Proposed

In small trials AHCC raised dendritic cells and influenza B antibodies and kept NK cell numbers from falling; in the HPV pilots, clearance coincided with suppressed interferon-beta. How these changes relate to clinical results is not established.5678

Lab studies: drug metabolism

1 note

Cell work, not tested in people; not an interaction finding.

CYP2D6 (human liver cells)
In lab enzyme tests AHCC did not inhibit CYP3A4, 2C8, 2C9 or 2D6 but was a CYP2D6 substrate, and in human liver cells it induced CYP2D6; the authors raise possible interactions with CYP2D6 drugs such as doxorubicin and ondansetron. No human study has tested this.14

Each point is worked out from the data and the sources numbered on this page, with the arithmetic shown under it. It adds no new data and is not medical advice.

HPV is where the data are strongest

A 50-woman placebo-controlled trial followed earlier uncontrolled pilots that also reported clearance; no larger confirmatory trial has been published.38

Immune markers are not infections

Healthy-volunteer studies reported more dendritic cells, better influenza B antibodies or steadier NK cell numbers, but none measured how often people got sick.567

Starting from one medicine? The interaction checker rates how serious each pair is, on a curated list of 19 entries for 11 medicines. This cabinet has no severity rating: it lists every interaction row our supplement pages cite.

Not medical advice, and no dosing advice. An empty result means no row we cite names that pair, by name or through a drug class we can link the medicine to, not that a combination is safe. Where our sources name only a group of medicines we cannot match, the cabinet says so. Ask your pharmacist before you combine supplements and medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.

Common questions

6 answers
Does AHCC clear HPV?

In a 50-woman placebo-controlled trial, 63.6% of those completing 6 months of AHCC tested HPV-negative vs 10.5% on placebo; it has not been confirmed in a larger trial.3

Does AHCC help during chemotherapy?

In 98 people with pancreatic cancer it reduced taste disorders and improved nutrition markers, but did not reduce anaemia.4

Does AHCC boost immunity in healthy people?

Small trials found shifts in immune cells and influenza B antibodies; none showed fewer infections.567

Is AHCC safe?

Side effects were mild in the HPV trial. Health Canada says to ask a practitioner before using shiitake products with blood thinners and to stop if allergy occurs.31

Is AHCC safe for the liver?

LiverTox has no AHCC entry. No adverse events were reported on 1 g or 3 g a day for 12 weeks in 69 adults with alcohol-related raised liver enzymes, or on 3 g a day for 2 years in 29 patients after liver cancer surgery.1012

What is AHCC?

A standardised extract of cultured shiitake mushroom mycelia made by Amino Up in Japan.43
