Alpha BRAIN review: what the trials found, and what you are paying for

Alpha BRAIN is one of very few nootropics tested as a finished product. Here is what is in it, what the two trials showed, how it compares with Black Label and the gummies, and what a do-it-yourself version with disclosed doses costs.

What is in Alpha BRAIN

Per 2 capsules: vitamin B6 10 mg; a 650 mg "Flow Blend" (L-tyrosine, L-theanine, oat straw extract, phosphatidylserine); cat’s claw extract 350 mg; a 240 mg "Focus Blend" (Alpha GPC, bacopa 100 mg, huperzine A 400 mcg); and a 60 mg "Fuel Blend" (L-leucine, pterostilbene).

Only bacopa, huperzine A, cat’s claw and B6 have amounts you can see. Everything else is a share of a blend, so the L-theanine or Alpha GPC dose could be well below what single-ingredient studies used.

What the two trials found

  • 2016, Human Psychopharmacology (PMID 26876224): 63 healthy adults aged 18–35, 6 weeks after a 2-week placebo run-in. Compared with placebo, Alpha BRAIN improved delayed verbal recall and executive-function tasks. The authors called it the first randomized trial of the product and said more research was needed.
  • 2018, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (PMID 29855372): active-duty soldiers. Alpha BRAIN had no statistically significant effect on marksmanship hits, reaction time or accuracy versus placebo.
  • Two small trials with mixed results is better than most nootropic blends have, but it is not strong evidence. We grade it C.

Safety notes

  • Alpha BRAIN and Black Label contain huperzine A, which affects acetylcholine; check with your clinician if you take prescription medicines.
  • Black Label’s velvet bean is standardized to 15% L-dopa (about 150 mg per 4 capsules); avoid with MAO inhibitors or levodopa products unless your prescriber agrees.
  • Neuro Gummies contain 50 mg caffeine per serving; count it toward your daily caffeine and avoid it near bedtime.

FAQ

How long does Alpha BRAIN take to work?

The positive 2016 trial measured results after 6 weeks of daily use. Single doses were not tested in that trial.

Is Alpha BRAIN Black Label better?

It discloses every dose and adds citicoline, lion’s mane and a little caffeine, but it has not been trialed as a finished product and costs about three and a half times as much per serving.

Does Alpha BRAIN have caffeine?

The original Alpha BRAIN capsules are caffeine-free. Black Label has 25 mg per serving and Neuro Gummies have 50 mg.
