  • Male or female aged 18 to 35 years old
  • Patients who have been diagnosed with one of the following schizophrenia-spectrum disorders: schizophreniform disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, unspecified psychosis.
  • Less than five years in treatment for psychosis (note that the duration of psychosis may be longer than 5 years, but this is more difficult to ascertain and therefore less reliable as an inclusion criterion).

1 more inclusion criterion and the exclusion criteria are on the listing.

What it tests, as registered

MitoQ; Placebo

Registered summary

The goal of this double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial is to test the effect of 12 weeks of orally administered MitoQ (mitoquinol mesylate) supplementation on cognition in 50 people with early phase schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (E-SSD) who have mitochondrial dysfunction (called high risk, or HR). Cognitive impairments in SSD can cause significant disability. Yet, there are no effective treatments for cognitive impairments in SSD. It has been shown that alterations in a certain type of brain cell (parvalbumin interneurons, or PVI) underlie cognitive deficits in SSD. The full summary is on the listing.

Who it lists and where

Who the trial lists, as registered

Lists people 18 to 29; healthy volunteers accepted. Conditions: Adverse Childhood Experience; Endothelial Function (FMD); Endothelial Injury; Mitochondrial Function; Oxidative Stress; Psychosocial Influence on Cardiovascular Disease.

The exclusion criteria are on the listing.

What it tests, as registered

Mitoquinone mesylate (MitoQ); Placebo

Registered summary

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) represent highly stressful events in the first 18 years of life that include abuse, neglect, and household and community-level dysfunction. Greater exposure to ACEs are associated with greater increases in the risk of cardiovascular diseases and death. Our laboratory has previously observed that vascular function is disrupted in young adults with prior ACE exposure, even though these individuals appear to be healthy clinically (i.e., no classic clinical cardiovascular disease risk factors). What it tests, as registered

Mitoquinol Mesylate; Placebo

Registered summary

Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of effective therapeutics for prevention or treatment. Our previous ex vivo work demonstrated that mitochondrial-antioxidants can reverse placental microvascular damage. Therefore, this study will evaluate whether MitoQ (Mitoquinol Mesylate, a mitochondrial-antioxidant) has the potential to restore vasodilation, improve placental function, and therefore promote pregnancy prolongation in patients with gestational hypertension (gHTN) and/or preeclampsia. What it tests, as registered

MitoQ; Placebo; MitoTempo; Tempol; L-NAME; SNP - Sodium Nitroprusside

Registered summary

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the non-Hispanic Black (NHB) population is disproportionately affected. Our research has previously demonstrated that oxidative stress may contribute to reduced vascular function in otherwise healthy NHB adults, potentially predisposing them to the development of hypertension and CVD. This study is designed to examine whether the mitochondria are an important source of oxidative stress-induced vascular dysfunction in healthy NHB adults.
