Who the trial lists, as registered
Lists people 18 to 75. Conditions: Renal Insufficiency, Chronic.
Stage III or IV Chronic Kidney Disease, defined as reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) to 15-59 cc/minute as calculated by the modified Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation or the Chronic Kidney…
Stable renal function, with no greater than a 30% reduction in eGFR over the prior 3 months
Does not exercise regularly (defined as exercising less than 20 minutes twice per week)
Willing and able to cooperate with the study protocol
2 more inclusion criteria and the exclusion criteria are on the listing.
What it tests, as registered
6R-BH4; 6R-BH4 placebo; Folic acid; Exercise training; Stretching; Histidine and beta-alanine supplementation; Histidine and beta-alanine placebo
Registered summary
The purpose of this study is to find out why patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have poor exercise capacity and to explore what causes an increase in blood pressure during exercise (i.e. increased adrenaline levels, or decreased ability of blood vessels to dilate). This study will also test whether or not regular exercise on a bicycle and/or treatment with 6R-BH4 (Kuvan) pills, or histidine and beta-alanine supplementation improves these measures during exercise. The full summary is on the listing.

Michael C Willey
About 60 people
Started Jun 17, 2024
In plain words A Phase 2 study of L-Histidine in people 65 and older, run by Michael C Willey. It plans to enroll about 60 people at 2 US sites.
Who it lists and where
Who the trial lists, as registered
Lists people 65 and older. Conditions: Femoral Fracture; Fragility Fracture; Muscle Atrophy.
Hospital inpatient
Age ≥ 65 years old on admission
Low-energy mechanism of injury
Diagnosis of femur fracture (OTA 31, 32, or 33 fracture)
2 more inclusion criteria and the exclusion criteria are on the listing.
What it tests, as registered
Essential Amino Acid Supplementation
Registered summary
This trial will evaluate the impact of 4 weeks of postoperative essential amino acid (EAA)-based supplementation on muscle morphology after femoral fragility fracture. This trial will assess the ability of EAA-based to increase skeletal muscle metabolic activity, reduce inflammation, and induce muscle fiber hypertrophy, as well as preserve skeletal muscle mass and physical performance up to 6 months after injury. Participants will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to 1) standard of care (no dietary intervention) or 2) EAA-based supplementation.

In plain words A study of L-Histidine in female participants 25 to 45, run by University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. It plans to enroll about 44 people at 1 US site.
Participant is an adult between the ages of 25-45 years
Participant has a recorded BMI between 18.5-30 kg/m\^2
Participant is apparently healthy and free from disease, as determined by a health history questionnaire
Participant is a biological female
4 more inclusion criteria and the exclusion criteria are on the listing.
What it tests, as registered
Essential Amino Acid+; Non-Calorie Placebo; High intensity Interval Training; No Exercise
Registered summary
This study evaluates the acute and chronic effects of an essential amino acid supplement (Daily Upgrade EAA+) on metabolomics, amino acid kinetics, metabolic rate, body composition in active adult women. The study consists of an acute randomized double-blind crossover phase comparing EAA+, whey protein isolate, and placebo before high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and a chronic randomized double-blind parallel-arm phase evaluating 3 weeks of EAA+ or placebo supplementation combined with twice-weekly HIIT.

Who it lists and where
Who the trial lists, as registered
Lists people 18 to 70; healthy volunteers accepted. Conditions: Cirrhosis, Liver.
Cirrhotic patients:
Cirrhosis diagnosed by liver biopsy and/or clinical, biochemical and imaging evidence of cirrhosis.
Abstinence from alcohol and/or other recreational drugs for at least 6 months
Child's Pugh score 5-9 (inclusive).
11 more inclusion criteria and the exclusion criteria are on the listing.
Loss of skeletal muscle mass or sarcopenia is the most common and potentially reversible complication in cirrhosis that increases morbidity and mortality before, during and after liver transplantation. No proven treatments exist for the prevention or reversal of sarcopenia in cirrhosis, primarily because the mechanisms responsible for this are unknown. The full summary is on the listing.

No phase
University of Chicago
About 18 people
Starts Jul 15, 2026 (estimated)
In plain words A study of L-Histidine in people 18 and older, run by University of Chicago. It plans to enroll about 18 people at 1 US site.
Who it lists and where
Who the trial lists, as registered
Lists people 18 and older; healthy volunteers accepted. Conditions: Healthy Adult.
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether dietary monosodium glutamate (MSG), a common food flavor enhancer, increases the blood level of a gut-microbiome-derived compound called imidazole propionate (ImP) in healthy adult volunteers. ImP is a compound made by gut bacteria from the amino acid histidine, and higher blood levels have been linked to problems with blood-sugar control. The full summary is on the listing.
