Lists people 50 and older. Conditions: Peripheral Artery Disease.
Age 50 and older
Presence of peripheral artery disease, defined as:
An ankle brachial index (ABI) <= 0.90 at baseline
Vascular lab evidence of PAD (such as a toe brachial pressure <= 0.70 or an ankle brachial index <=0.90), or angiographic evidence of PAD defined as at least 70% stenosis of an artery supplying the lower extremities.

What it tests, as registered
Beetroot juice; Placebo
Registered summary
The BEET PAD Trial is a multi-centered double-blind randomized clinical trial designed to determine whether beetroot juice, compared to placebo, improves six-minute walk distance at four month follow-up in people with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD). Investigators hypothesize that by simultaneously increasing lower extremity perfusion, gastrocnemius muscle mitochondrial activity, and myofiber health and regeneration, beetroot juice will significantly improve walking performance in people with PAD. Supervised Treadmill Exercise; Home-Based Exercise; Nitrate-rich beetroot Juice
Registered summary
Supervised exercise therapy (SET), consisting of treadmill exercise conducted three times weekly at a center while supervised by healthcare personnel, is first line therapy for people disabled by lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD). However, travelling three times/week to a center for SET is burdensome. Compared to SET, home-based exercise is more accessible and less burdensome. Yet, evidence-based guidelines recommend SET over home-based exercise for PAD. The full summary is on the listing.

Menopause greatly increases cardiovascular disease risk (CVD). Current exercise guidelines are inadequate to ameliorate this risk and higher intensity exercise may be necessary for cardiovascular benefits in postmenopausal females. Oral nitrate supplementation enhances exercise performance and CVD risk profile in several clinical conditions. Menopause and ageing bring several changes to women's health, partly due to a decline in the hormone estrogen. Registered summary
Pre-eclampsia is a serious condition that typically affects pregnant women after the 20th week of pregnancy, characterized by high blood pressure and damage to organs such as the kidneys and liver. Currently, treatment options are limited, which has prompted researchers to explore alternative approaches. One such promising alternative is dietary nitrate found in vegetables like beetroot, as nitrate can be converted into nitric oxide in the body, which helps lower blood pressure. Registered summary
It is known that alcohol consumption can lead to cognitive impairment and dysregulation of inflammatory responses. A preliminary randomized controlled trial conducted by our research team has suggested that nitrate may improve cognition in hospitalized patients with alcohol dependence. To further expand the population and applicability, this study aims to explore the effects of nitrate on cognition in a real-world population of heavy drinkers. The full summary is on the listing.

Registered summary
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if taking a beetroot juice supplement will work in people living with Alzheimer's disease. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Can people living with Alzheimer's disease realistically drink beetroot juice regularly (for example, is it easy to take, free from side effects and acceptable)? * Does drinking beetroot juice twice a day improve health in people living with Alzheimer's disease? Researchers will look at how you managed with the beetroot juice, as well as if there were any improvements in your health measures. The full summary is on the listing.

What it tests, as registered
Beetroot juice; Nitrate-depleted Beetroot Juice Placebo
Registered summary
This study will investigate whether a single dose of beetroot juice can improve cardiovascular responses and recovery after exercise in adults with Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes is associated with higher blood pressure, impaired blood vessel function, and reduced autonomic control of the heart, all of which increase cardiovascular risk and may affect how the body responds to and recovers from physical activity. Beetroot juice is naturally rich in dietary nitrate, which is converted in the body into nitric oxide, a molecule that helps blood vessels relax and improve blood flow. Anthropogenic warming is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events. Elevated temperatures raise the risk of mortality and hospital admissions, particularly among people with chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Globally, around 530 million people live with T2DM , and in the United Kingdom nearly six million are affected, creating a substantial population vulnerable to heat related illness.
