Oral ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

Also called ATP supplement, adenosine 5'-triphosphate, adenosine triphosphate, ATP disodium, PeakATP.

The short answer

From 11 sources

Swallowed ATP does not raise ATP in the blood: two Dutch trials found only higher uric acid. Even so, small trials of 400 mg a day, several funded by the maker of PeakATP, reported strength and power gains, and a 2024 meta-analysis of five trials in 121 men found greater maximal strength. Other trials found no benefit.

How we chose: Momentous is the partner brand we list first, so its product leads whenever the Where to buy list has one for this compound or a form in our Forms table. Otherwise, among partner brands that passed our vetting without conditions (others only when none sells it), the first product in that list whose name matches a form in our Forms table, else the first one listed. Not a claim that it works: check the amount per serving against the studied doses and limits.

Usual trial dose
400 mg of ATP disodium, often 30 minutes before exercise710
Null trials
No benefit in a 3-minute all-out test or in isokinetic knee strength89
Safety marker
Up to 5,000 mg a day for 28 days left liver and kidney markers normal3

What it is

Oral ATP supplements contain adenosine 5'-triphosphate, the cell's energy-carrying molecule, usually as a disodium salt.

How it works

Proposed

Swallowed ATP did not raise blood ATP in absorption trials; only uric acid, its final breakdown product, rose. One performance trial reported that ATP blunted the post-exercise fall in blood ATP, ADP and AMP. How oral ATP could act is not established.235

What the numbers add up to

Each point is worked out from the data and the sources numbered on this page, with the arithmetic shown under it. It adds no new data and is not medical advice.

Uric acid, not ATP, goes up

Two Maastricht trials found no rise in blood ATP after large oral doses; the only consistent change was higher uric acid, ATP's final breakdown product.23

How we got this: Comparison of the 2011 and 2012 absorption trials

Positive trials share a sponsor

The 12-week strength trial and the dose-response trial had authors employed by or consulting for TSI, the PeakATP seller, and TSI funded the dose-response trial; trials without stated industry ties were small, with mixed results.4768

Studied doses in research, not advice. These are amounts used in research, not personal advice. Your clinician or pharmacist can say what fits you.

Doses studied in human trials

Doses studied in human trials ranged from a single 100 mg dose to 400 mg a day for 12 weeks in performance trials; absorption studies used up to 5,000 mg a day for 28 days.743

Starting from one medicine? The interaction checker rates how serious each pair is, on a curated list of 19 entries for 11 medicines. This cabinet has no severity rating: it lists every interaction row our supplement pages cite.

Not medical advice, and no dosing advice. An empty result means no row we cite names that pair, by name or through a drug class we can link the medicine to, not that a combination is safe. Where our sources name only a group of medicines we cannot match, the cabinet says so. Ask your pharmacist before you combine supplements and medicines.

Who should be careful

3 groups
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children
NCCIH notes that many dietary supplements have not been tested in pregnant women, nursing mothers or children.1
Gout or high uric acid
Swallowed ATP is broken down to uric acid: in a 28-day trial plasma uric acid rose only after 5,000 mg doses, and a single 5,000 mg dose released in the upper small intestine raised it by about 50%. Trials have not tested people with gout or kidney stones.32
Medicines and surgery
No published drug interactions for oral ATP were found in NCCIH guidance or the trials we cite; interaction data are lacking. NCCIH advises that supplements may interact with medications or pose risks before surgery, and to tell your health care providers about everything you use.1
Talk to your pharmacist or clinician before starting a supplement, especially if you take prescription medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions; the numbers link to the sources below.

Common questions

7 answers
Does ATP increase strength?

A 2024 meta-analysis of five small trials found 8.13 kg more maximal strength than placebo, but no change in repetitions or anaerobic power.10

Does ATP improve reaction time?

In one 20-person crossover trial, 400 mg a day for 14 days lessened the drop in some reaction-time measures after hard sprinting, but mood and cognitive test scores did not change.11

Is oral ATP safe?

Up to 5,000 mg a day for 28 days left liver and kidney markers normal but raised uric acid. NCCIH advises telling your health care providers about any supplement you use.31

How much ATP was used in studies?

Mostly 400 mg of ATP disodium, often 30 minutes before training; 100 mg showed no benefit in a dose comparison.710

Does oral ATP interact with medicines?

No published interaction studies or case reports were found; data are lacking. NCCIH advises telling your health care providers about any supplement, especially before surgery.1

Is oral ATP absorbed?

Not as ATP. Two randomised trials found no rise in blood ATP after up to 5,000 mg, single or daily for 28 days; only uric acid rose.23

Who funded the ATP research?

TSI, which sells PeakATP, funded the dose-response trial and had employees or consultants among the authors of the 12-week strength trial; the absorption trials declared no competing interests.742
