What the research says about the key ingredients

Our notes on the four ingredients that recur across the lineup, graded on the scale we use for supplements where trials exist. They are about the ingredients, not these products: no Bella Bleu product has been studied itself.

  1. DMSO on its own, as the active ingredient

    In two placebo-controlled knee trials, the DMSO carrier alone did no better than a placebo solution.

    In a 12-week trial of 775 adults with knee osteoarthritis, a DMSO solution with no drug in it did no better than a placebo solution; diclofenac carried in the same solution did better than both.

    A 4-week trial of 248 adults found the same: pain scores fell 2.5 points with the DMSO carrier and 2.5 points with a placebo that held a token amount of DMSO.

  2. DMSO as a drug solvent in prescription products

    A fact about prescription drugs, not a finding about these products.

    DMSO is the penetration enhancer in prescription diclofenac topical solution, which is 45.5% DMSO by weight. A 2011 review describes it as an established way to carry both water-loving and fat-loving drugs through the skin.

    That carrying works on whatever is on the skin. It is why the prescription label says to apply it to clean, dry skin and to let the area dry before anything else goes on it.

    No study has tested whether DMSO carries magnesium or anything else in these balms through the skin; this note is about DMSO as a solvent for prescription drugs and why the handling rules below matter.

  3. Magnesium chloride on the skin

    Little evidence that magnesium crosses intact skin in useful amounts.

    The only randomized human study we found gave 25 adults a magnesium cream or a placebo cream for two weeks. Blood magnesium rose slightly in the magnesium cream group and not in the placebo group; the rise was significant only in a subgroup of non-athletes. One author disclosed a possible future royalty on a different magnesium cream.

    A 2017 review concluded that claims for magnesium absorbed through the skin are scientifically unsupported (one of its authors lists an e-mail address at Protina, a maker of oral magnesium products).

    A 2026 lab study that applied a magnesium sulfate solution to pig skin found almost no magnesium crossed intact skin, and far more once the outer layer was stripped away.

  4. Beef tallow as a moisturizer

    A traditional fat for skin and soap, with no controlled human trials of its own.

    A 2024 scoping review found 19 studies on tallow and skin, mostly lab, animal and comparison studies, and called for controlled human trials.

    A 2025 analysis of social media posts found most skin claims for tallow came with no cited evidence, and that most of the evidence that exists concerns the fats tallow contains.

    Like other fats and waxes, tallow sits on the skin as an occlusive: the kind of moisturizer ingredient that slows water loss from the skin surface.

  5. Castor oil on the skin

    Rated safe as a cosmetic ingredient; studies of its skin effects are small.

    The Cosmetic Ingredient Review expert panel (2025 re-review) concluded that castor seed oil and ricinoleic acid are safe as used in cosmetics, where they work mainly as skin-conditioning agents.

    A 2026 dermatology review found castor oil generally well tolerated, with rare contact dermatitis, and called for more clinical study of its skin uses.
